Flamethrower - Impact and Consequences
The Flamethrowers had a large impact on the war. The weapon brought terror to French and British soldiers at the thought of being burned alive by such a weapon. It could also be shot into trenches luring soldiers out to be shot down on the spot. Leaders of warring nations opposing the Germans now had new problems concerning the flamethrowers such as how to avoid them, getting medical supplies for severe burns on the field and new battle tactics to overcome the weapon.
The flamethrower had its advantages and disadvantages. It gave Germans a new reputation to be feared, the weapon gave the military a large advantage and the flamethrowers were repeatedly used in many battles. But they were hard to use and the fuel only lasted about two minutes. Flamethrowers were banned by the Treaty of Versailles in Germany but when Hitler rose to power in 1933 and the German army was rebuilt, knowing how effective they were backpack flamethrowers were again used and brought into WW2.
